Whistler Residence
A quiet riverside retreat in Whistler, immersed in nature.
Set within a secluded estate property along a rushing river, the Whistler Residence is conceived as a quiet retreat immersed in nature. Surrounded by a dense tapestry of moss, ferns, and native flora, the home embraces an extraordinary sense of privacy and calm, where the sound of water moving below becomes a constant, grounding presence.
Designed as a weekend escape for a small family, the house is intentionally modest in scale yet highly functional. A single-level, linear floor plan organizes four bedrooms alongside generous living spaces, complemented by a dedicated spa circuit. A detached garage connects to the home via a covered breezeway, reinforcing a composed and understated arrival sequence.
The home settles gently into the landscape, with the structure carefully sited along the river’s edge, hovering just enough to capture expansive views and the soothing rhythm of the water below. Openings are deliberate, framing the surrounding forest and drawing natural light deep into the home while maintaining a strong sense of shelter.
Materiality is rooted in the context: weathered grey cedar cladding, local stone, and full flagstone floors anchor the home to its environment. Exposed Douglas fir rafters and millwork introduce warmth and craft to the interiors, creating a tactile contrast to the subdued exterior palette. The detailing is refined yet restrained—an exploration of elevating the familiar through careful proportion and execution rather than overt expression.
Inside, the atmosphere is calm and introspective, guided by a wabi-sabi sensibility that embraces natural textures and quiet imperfection. The result is a warm, protective refuge from the elements—an architecture that recedes, allowing the landscape, the river, and the experience of place to lead.
